We searched for an SPD compatible cycling shoe in kids' sizes for months and finally found the Answer Speeder SPD Cleat for clipless pedals. It has a 3-velcro strap center reversed closure system with laces, high traction rubber compound sole with a stiff innersole, breathable mesh uppers, an anatomic heel cup to resist heel-slip and they are MTB (mountainbike) pedal and cleat compatible. These have the option of two screw-ins for spikes in the sole near the toe to climb up a hill too steep to ride. These will increase your child's times and efficiency beyond belief.
